Yes and no. Weed killers (post emergents) are only effective if the weed is growing and visibly present. Broad leaf weeds if visible can be treated any time of year. Grassy weeds, however, may need soil and air temperatures higher than typically are present in March. It is not too early to spray PRE emergence treatments in March and actually it is best to apply in the fall, winter, and spring as you want to catch these weeds before they sprout.
It is also important to note that post emergent weed killing products can only be used when the weeds are visible. If you want to prevent weeds from sprouting, you would need to use pre-emergence weed killing products which are to be sprayed before soil temperatures get to 50 degrees. They will otherwise be ineffective.

Is March Too Early to Spray Weeds?

At College Fund Landscaping, we use the following types of weed control services:
  • Pre-emergent weed control- This helps prevent seeds from germinating by using pre-emergent materials on different types of weeds, such as broadleaf and grassy weeds. We recommend at least three applications throughout the year for the best results.
  • Post-emergent weed control-these kills weeds that have already germinated. The products used depend on the type of weed in your lawn.

Types of Weed Control Services

Weeding can be done using the following common methods:
  • Cultural control- may include hand-pulling, mowing, burning, mulching, competitive planting, and cultivation.
  • Chemical control-this involves weed control and prevention by herbicides.
  • Mechanical method- mechanical methods may include slashing and plowing.

What Are the Three Methods of Weed Control?

Unwanted weeds are pesky and unsightly and can ruin your beautifully manicured lawn. Weed control is crucial because weeds suffocate plants and grass as they rob vital nutrients, soil, water, sunlight, and space. Weeds also carry crop pathogens or host damaging insects and rob a crop of its yield potential.

Why Is Weed Control Important?

  • Weed control by hand- this involves manually removing weeds by hand or using farm tools
  • Organic weed control- this includes the application of naturally occurring weed control agents such as vinegar, organic manure or even protozoans
  • Weed control and prevention by herbicides- systemic and contact herbicides are used to treat weeds

What Are the Different Types of Weeding?

The weed index measures the efficiency (percent reduction) of a particular treatment due to the presence of weeds compared to a weed treatment. It is used to assess the efficacy of an herbicide. When the weed index is less, the more efficient the herbicide is.

What Is Professional Weed Control?

Weeds can occur in any lawn, but they barely become problematic if well-managed. Proper site preparation before planting is key to starting a healthy lawn. Your lawn may be predisposed to weed invasion due to poor maintenance practices that debilitate it, like improper mowing height, improper frequency in mowing and fertilizer application as well as poor water management.

Lawn weed control is the prevention or control of the growth of unwanted, invasive plants in your lawn. Once effectively controlled, there is low competition for soil, water, nutrients, space, and light which are crucial for a healthy lawn. When left uncontrolled, weeds may host pests and diseases that can cause headaches and high costs.

At College Fund Landscaping, our comprehensive lawn weed control services eliminate various types of weeds, rejuvenating your lawn and landscape. We recommend periodically maintaining your lawn to keep your lawn weed-free without the need for extensive chemical use.
